Trying Out Vegan Food at Cafe Sunflower

I am really new to the vegan scene.  I’ll admit that I haven’t tried that many plant based dishes so I was excited to be trying out a full vegan meal at Cafe Sunflower.

We had family visit recently and because they are vegan we decided to take them to Cafe Sunflower in Buckhead for Sunday brunch. I felt really bad for not being able to cook anything that would work for them.  I know they must get tired of people offering them salad so I was glad to find somewhere good to take them and Cafe Sunflower came highly recommended.  It wasn’t a hard sell to get my husband and daughter to go.  We were all eager to try something new.

Cafe Sunflower

We were there for Sunday Brunch.  On Sundays they serve a seasonal menu that changes.  Since I was new to it I wanted to try many things.  We made sure to all order something different so that we could try each others dishes.

I tried the Loaded Breakfast Burrito.  According to the menu this burrito includes:  Tofu scramble, avocado, home fries, sausage, black beans, sauteed onions, Daiya cheese in a spinach tortilla topped with homemade chipotle sauce and served with sweet potato chips and house made salsa. This burrito was huge.  I was stunned when I found that the “eggs” were actually the tofu scramble.  The texture and color had me fooled.  The sausage was tasty and tasted more like a turkey sausage.  The potato wedges, onions, black beans and everything else blended together nicely inside the spinach tortilla.  The homemade salsa was so fresh and good.

My daughter ordered the Blueberry Pancakes.  The pancakes come with Almond butter, maple syrup and blueberry coulis with vegan whipped cream.  As you can see they were served fresh and hot off the griddle.  The almond butter melted before I could get a good pic with it on top. These cakes were fluffy, light and naturally sweet.  The almond butter and vegan whipped cream did not miss a beat in taste and flavor.

My husband ordered the Chicken and Waffles.  This dish included Waffle topped with fried chicken seitan, mustard maple syrup with vegan whipped cream.  Ok so this one really blew me away.  I have no idea what “Fried Chicken Seitan” is but baby they seasoned and fried them just right.  My husband is a very picky meat eater and he cleaned his whole plate!  I almost didn’t get a taste of it.

Even though I ate to my hearts content I noticed that after we ate that I did not feel bloated or tired.  There was no “itis” present, if you will. It made me really have second thoughts about what I am eating and putting into my body.  I have a grandchild that is being raised vegan so I cant wait to bring her to Cafe Sunflower. All and all I really enjoyed this experience.  My family that came in town were pleased with everything and I was happy that I could take them somewhere they could eat freely.

Have you ever been to a plant based restaurant before?
