Atlanta Black Restaurant Week – NOSH & Power of the Palate

If you missed Atlanta Black Restaurant Week then you missed out! Once again this year I got to attend some of the events for the week.  As a long time supporter of Black Atlanta events I was glad to be one of the 1st outlets to announce that Black Restaurant Week was coming to Atlanta last year.  “Atlanta’s” Black Restaurant Week is in its 2nd year of celebrating the Black culinary sector here in Atlanta.  We attended NOSH and Power of the PALATE. The NOSH event is a culinary showcase that features Atlanta’s premiere Black Chefs, caterers and food product makers. The Power of the Palate showcased Atlanta’s premiere Black Bartenders.

NOSH

My husband attended with me and we had a great time.  There were several tasting stations with many delicious options from sweet to savory to choose from.  There was so much of everything.  If you didn’t come in there to eat you were in the wrong place.  But in addition to just tasting there were live cooking demos, chef commentary, a dj PLUS we got an opportunity to place votes for our favorites.

Upon entry we received carrying trays that had our NOSH Voting card, several drink tasting tickets and a shot glass!

From there we mozied from station to station tasting and sipping as we went.  There was so much to see and taste. We tasted everything from Maple Cupcakes sprinkled with Bacon to Collard Green Spring Rolls and Pimento Cheese balls.  Everything was well presented and delectable. here were some of my favorites:

Fraise al la Vodka – Strawberry Vodka Cream Cheese Filled French Toast from French Toast Connection ATL

Beautiful and scrumptious chocolates from Bombon Chocolates

bombons

Sugar Hi had us on a Sugar high with their mouth watering desserts!

Smoked braised Pork Belly over Pimento Cheese Mashed Potatoes, Stewed Red Beans, Crisp Collards in a Smoky Barbeque Au Jus by Chef Robert Butts, Executive Chef at Simon’s Restaurant on 5th and Juniper.

Drum Roll please! And the winner of the NOSH Cooking Competition:  Chef Robert Butts

I got on Periscope for a few minutes just to give you some LIVE unedited footage of what was going on.  (Excuse me for talking with my mouth full!) Check it out and you will see some chef interviews, attendee interviews plus what was happening on stage.

Power of the PALATE

The Power of the Palate is a Bartending Competition with cocktails sponsored by Makers Mark Bourbon. There were several stations set up, each with a bartender to pour you their creation.  I tasted them all and my favorite hands down was Ashley Brown’s Honey Basil Bourbon Lemonade.  It was a delightful cocktail.  The fresh honey and basil flavors came together to make a drink tasted like the a sweet nectar with a hint of bourbon.  But don’t get it twisted this mixture packed quite a punch and could definitely sneak up on you.

As far as presentation I loved how Thandi Walton decorated her station with rose petals and Maker’s Mark.

In this Periscope LIVE you will see more interviews, the DJ and a view of the Power of the Palate layout before it got crowded.

We had so much fun at this event.  It was wonderful to see and learn about the Chefs and what they offered.  I met some amazing people and I will definitely be spending my dollars with some of them in the future.  I can’t wait to see what Black Restaurant Week brings to Atlanta next year!
