Everything You Need To Know About Wine & Wine Tastings

Everything-you-need-to-know-about-wine
I absolutely love All Things Wine related.  I especially love to taste wine.  Wine tastings are a fun way to taste and learn about new wines.  I thought it would be a good idea to show you what to expect at a wine tasting so I stopped by Savor Wine Boutique on Hosea L Williams Drive.   Proprietor Kyla Cox was so very friendly and inviting.  I had a great time in her establishment.  I learned so much about wine and exactly what to expect at a wine tasting.

(Savor Wine has free “try before you buy” wine tastings every Wednesday and Saturday)

We specialize in wines that are not mass-produced or readily available in grocery and package stores. ~Kylo Cox, Proprietor, Savor Wine Boutique

Wine tastings generally feature wines from certain regions.  Northern France was the locale that we explored, specifically the Loire Valley.

We tasted the following 5 wines:

De Chanceny Cremant de Loire Rose Brut – Made of 100% Cabernet Franc

Vallee Loire Muscadet Sevre-at-Maine Sur Lie – 100% Melon de Bourgogne

Reserve des Vignerons Saumur Blanc – Made from 100% Chenin Blanc

Les Roches Touraine Sauvignon – Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc

Reserve des Vignerons Saumur Rouge – Made from 100% Cabernet Franc

There will be someone there to pour and explain each wine to you.  Patrick Guilford of Savannah Distributing Co., Inc. presented the wine to us at this tasting.  He answered every question that I had and injected his own brand of humor into all of his explanations.

More about Wine

When tasting wine remember that flavors do different things depending on where it hits your tongue.

Acidity is not a flavor but the way your mouth feels below the tongue.  The higher the acidity the more saliva it produces.

Tannin is also not a flavor but the way your mouth feels on top of the tongue.  It helps you tell if a wine is dry or not by the way it feels on the top of your tongue.

High Acid Wine (Whites) causes more saliva

Low Acid Wine (Reds) causes less saliva

Wine tastes vary by region.  Wine made in Italy is going to taste different than wine made in France.

Red wine is made by leaving the grape skins in the juice when fermenting.

White wine should be served cold at 55 – 65 degrees

Red wine should be served at room temps

Use your nose to pick up the fragrance of the wine.  You can smell if its fruity.

Use your tongue to pick up the alcohol, acidity, tannin, oak and sugar.

Swirling the wine in the glass adds air to it allowing the aroma to rise so that you can smell it.

More about Wine Tastings

When tasting wine do not expect a full glass, you will be getting just a taste.

You will taste 5 or more wines at each tasting.  (You might make sure you eat something prior to your excursion and also that you have a designated driver.)

Make no mistake.  The goal is to sell you wine.  Expect to taste some and then buy some.

I had a GREAT time learning all of this at Savor Wine Boutique.  Check out the visit in its entirety!

After this experience, we visited 3 exquisite wineries in North Georgia.  You can read all about that excursion here:
