Real to Reel was a celebration of new African American voices in film. Held at Atlanta venue, The Gathering Spot, the place was packed with Black stars, local celebs and new filmmakers. It was hosted by Writer, Producer, Director Anthony Rose of Black Rose Studios and presented by Gentleman Jack Daniels.
Real to Reel, together with Codeblack Entertainment, showcases rising African American filmmakers and helps to shine a light on their unique stories and talent.
I got a chance to attend a panel discussion with the filmmakers who were being showcased. The panel included:

Screenwriter, Director, Producer – Yasmin Neal
Former Team USA Track Champion, Filmmaker – Johnny Dutch
“All Eyez On Me” Actor – Demetrius “Tupac” Shipp Jr.
The panelists spoke on some of the conflicts that they have run into as independent filmmakers. “All Eyez On Me” Actor – Demetrius “Tupac” Shipp Jr. talked about the difficulties of being typecast.
After Jack Daniels themed cocktails and delicious nosh were served all guests were led to a screening area to view multiple short films. It was interesting to see how the filmmakers took real life scenarios and translated it the big screen, hence “Real to Reel”. It was very cool to have them watching with us.
I am an avid movie watcher who looks forward to seeing what the future holds for these talented artists. Trends are slowly changing in Hollywood and it seems that they are just now realizing that we will sell out Box Offices with or without their approval. Although I have been watching Black films with all Black casts for years I am eager to see our real stories told with bigger budgets and better sets.
