Gambero Rosso Vini D’Italia: Top Italian Wine Tour Comes to Atlanta

Magnifico! Bellissimo! (Can you tell that I have been exploring Italian Wines?) Gambero Rosso, the global authority on Italian wine and publisher of the esteemed annual Guide to Italian Wines, brought its international tour, “Vini D’Italia”, to Atlanta for the first time.

“The U.S. is the most important market for Italian wine outside of Italy and we are very excited about expanding the Gambero Rosso tour beyond traditional markets like New York and into some of the other cities with hot restaurant scenes and an appreciation for fine wine and food.” says Marco Sabellico, editor-at-large of Gambero Rosso’s Guide to Italian Wines.

Gambero Rosso “Vini D’Italia”

Gambero Rosso’s “Vini D’Italia” was held at Southern Exchange Ballrooms. The place was full of Atlanta’s wine industry leaders including media, restaurant reps, importers, distributors, educators and more.  It celebrated the release of Gambero Rosso’s 32nd Edition of their annual guide of the same name.

I thoroughly enjoy exploring regional wine so this was right up my alley. It was a very educational experience for me as I learned so much about the history of Italian wine while I was there.

From Folio Fine Wine Partners I learned about Borgo Conventi, a monastery where the wine comes from was originally made by the monks who lived there.  The region is called Fruili Venezia Giulia and is located in the far north eastern corner of Italy.  I tasted Collio Fruilano, Collio Sauvignon and Collio Pinot Grigio.

Here is what we learned about Trentino Wine.

The Charcuterie Board was well stocked with all of my favorite Italian meats and cheeses including:  Sopressata, Capicola, Salami, Pepperoni and Mortadella.

The “prize” for the most unique bottles went to Perla Del Garda.  Their Laguna Perla and Laguna Bio were nice.  These were two whites that I wouldn’t mind having on hand for guests or vacations in the Summer.

There were SO many different types of Prosecco in the house.  I happen to love all Prosecco but never tasted ones that were so crisp to the tongue like these.  There were stark differences between them all in terms of sweetness and dryness.

You will notice that I focused on Whites for this post so I would like to explore more Reds next time.  It was a beautiful day and the closest I have ever come to strolling the Italian countryside… In my mind.  I can’t wait to do it again next year.

What do you love most about Italian Wines?
