The much anticipated 2nd Season of FX series Atlanta begins on March 1st. I was super excited to be invited to attend the Black Carpet/Screening here in Atlanta. Donald Glover (Earn Marks) and Brian Tyree Henry (Paper Boi) were both in attendance as they introduced the new Season at Atlanta’s one and only Starlite Drive In and Flea Market!
I listed Atlanta on FX as one of the top 5 Series to watch last year and I was right on the money as it ended its first season with 2 Golden Globe Awards.
Even though the cast were very tight lipped when asked about what Season 2 has to offer, the tagline “Robbin Season” should be an indication of what we might be in store for. We saw many cast and crew members on the Black carpet including: Executive Producer, Stephen Glover, Producer/Writer Stefani Robinson and Co-Executive Producer/Director Hiro Murai.
NATURAL HAIR is in FULL Effect in the series Atlanta! I saw so many dope natural hair styles on the Black carpet that I simply had to address a few of the young men I saw rocking natural hair styles. It warms my heart to see these young guys embracing their natural tresses too. Natural hair styles are not just for women!
I’ve done many carpets in Atlanta and been to quite a few screenings and very few of them are on the Southside of Metro Atlanta and there damn sure has never been a screening at Atlanta’s one and maybe the worlds only Drive In! (For you youngins, a “Drive In” is an outdoor movie theater where you sit in your car and watch the movie on a huge screen.) This is the basis for the one question that I was able to ask which was:
Why did you choose to have your screening here at the Starlite Drive In?
Donald Glover explained that his parents used to bring him to this very Drive In as a kid. Here he got to watch movies like Malcolm X and he could also sneak and watch rated R movies. Bryan Tyree Henry added that the Starlite Drive In is a very communal place

And this is what I love most about this entire franchise is the homage that it pays to the real city of Atlanta from the perspective of young Black men. Not the glitsy fake place you see on reality TV.
I’ve been keeping an eye on this young man Donald Glover, since he was on Community and became a real fan when he did a cover of my favorite PM Dawn song years back as his alter ego, Childish Gambino. I will be front and center when he debuts and the rebooted version of Lando Calrissian one of my favorite Star Wars characters formerly played by the great Billy D Williams.
I’m very excited about the new season of Atlanta which airs on FX on March 1st.
