Rising Above It: Breaking the Cycle of Divorce

Rising Above

This post is brought to you by the makers of Pine-Sol® Products. I have partnered with them to spread the word about  the ‘When Life Gets Tough, Women Rise Above It’ campaign and sweepstakes. To enter the sweepstakes, visit www.womenRiseAboveIt.com. All opinions and stories are my own.

I come from a line of divorced people.  That used to be the line that I gave men whenever they asked me to marry them.  It wasn’t until my last offer of marriage that I began to understand what my hesitation was.  After a lot of soul searching and self examination I discovered that growing up in a family full of women negated my need for a man.  My grandmother divorced my grandfather back in the 50’s.  My mom divorced my dad in the 70’s.  We grew up with absolutely no men present whatsoever. I remember being 11 years old and watching one of my aunt’s change the oil on her car.  I recall my mom teaching me how to use a lawn mower.  My sister and I reluctantly kill our own bugs.  But on the flipside I also remember the beatings my dad gave my mom.  I remember hearing my grandparents curse each other.  I remember my father failing us.  This caused me to disregard men.  That all changed when I met and fell in love with my husband.  Somehow he was able to break through all of my protective shields and see me for who I am.  He offers me unconditional love everyday of my life and his love is how I was able to rise above divorce.  With him I overcame my disdain for the male species.  He offered me a type of security that I have never had before.  I am now able to rise above and break the cycle of divorce that exists in my family as we work through and honor our union.  I am also able to show my sons and daughter what a healthy black marriage looks like and for this I am forever grateful.

To recognize and celebrate the remarkable women among us, Pine-Sol® Products is teaming up with actress and activist Rosie Perez to launch the ‘When Life Gets Tough, Women Rise Above It’ campaign.
