It was an absolute honor to be invited out to speak to the students at the University of West Georgia (UWG) about Careers in Social Media. The “Major Things” initiative is hosted by UWG Advising Center. The events cover a variety of topics to benefit the students in their future careers.

Major Things:  Careers in Social Media

The University of West Georgia is located in Carrollton whis is about 50 minutes outside of Atlanta.  I spoke on a panel of 8 that included both educators and influencers. It was held in one of the campus ballrooms. There were about 30 students in attendance.  There were two moderators and we took individual questions from the audience as well.  Here are just a few of the questions that we took:

For students looking to take on careers in social media, what skills do you believe are essential and are there general courses that you believe are beneficial to those student.

I first recommend that you stay in school and finish no matter how bright and shiny a career in social media may look to you.  Believe it or not there are skills and things that you will learn here that will help you tremendously along the way.  Courses like business management, creative writing, communications, and administrative management will all come in handy and may put you ahead of the pack.

What advice would you give to individuals who are interested in the field of social media?

Never give up, follow your goals and remember that it is very competitive out here but the beauty of social media is that you can literally create your own space in this field.

Are there any resources or training/ other applications that you use to improve your social media success?

In order to stay up date on all things social media I attend various blogging and business conferences.  I have also taken online courses and webinars from gurus in the industry.

There were many other questions that were taken and answered by all panelists before we took on general questions from the audience.

One question was about Google analytics, what it is and how it works.  I explained that analytics was a way to measure everything including ad clicks, demographics, page views, etc.

I felt like the information that was shared about social media was honest and beneficial to the attendees.  I brought my daughter along since she is currently doing college tours and applying to various schools.  We both had a great time interacting with staff and students before and after the event.

Special thanks to Academic Advisor, Jermale Jenkins for recommending me for this opportunity.
