There she stood intelligent and strong, beautiful & dark with natural hair gleaming. #BlackGirlPower coming from the four corners of the world. The North, South, the East and the West centering on her…the amazing Viola Davis. She gave a very stirring and poignant acceptance speech. Her first nomination. Her first win. Her nomination comes because of her excellence in the Drama Series “How To Get Away With Murder” (of which I am an avid fan). Her win makes her the first African American female to do so.
She started by quoting Harriet Tubman.
In my mind, I see a line. And over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line, but I can’t seem to get there no how. I cant seem to get over that line. ~Harriet Tubman in the 1800’s quoted by Viola Davis
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Nominees in this category included: Taraji P Henson, Elisabeth Moss, Tatiana Maslany, Viola Davis, Claire Danes, Robin Wright
…The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. ~ Viola Davis
She thanked these ladies for “…taking us over that line”: Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington, Nicole Beharie, Megan Good, Halle Berry and Gabrielle Union.
It’s 2015 so I am honestly amazed that she is just now becoming an Emmy winner. I mean really? but such is life. All I know is that I love her, I admire her and I am proud of her for being unafraid to honor her Blackness. Thank YOU Viola Davis for being a role model. Thank you for living your life in such a way that honors and respects our ancestors.
Here is her acceptance speech in its entirety.
YOU ROCK VIOLA DAVIS
