Sistah Spotlight!: Akira Byrd of CurlCentric.com and Curly Kids Coloring Book

I am pleased to be a part of the Curly Kids Coloring Book Virtual Blog Tour

Sistah Spotlight is a way to showcase women who I think are accomplishing wonderful things and it is also a way to promote what they were doing through my blog. Through Sistah Spotlight I will feature an African American woman who is doing great things both in social media and also face to face out in our community.

Curl Centric Blog Tour

For this month’s Sistah Spotlight, I’d like to shine light on Akira Byrd, creator of CurlCentric.com and author of Curly Kids Coloring Book. Akira is a working wife and mother and when she is not busy with her lovely family she dedicates her time to spreading the word about the beauty of natural hair.   I had a great time speaking with Akira and I love what she is doing for the natural hair community.  She is very passionate about positive messages and images. Using her teenaged daughter as her inspiration, she created CurlCentric.com.  She said that while encouraging her own child to embrace what God gave her she realized that it wasn’t just girls who needed to be taught about self acceptance but grown women as well. She talked about how her daughter was teased because of her natural hair and as the mother of a child with a LOT of hair I could completely relate.  I could also relate to how difficult it was to find all of the information that I needed in one place when I first went natural.  CurlCentric.com is an excellent resource for anyone looking for more information on the entire natural hair process.

When it came to teaching her 7 year old daughter about natural hair she decided to go a different route.  She actually developed a book to help!  She decided to create a coloring book that includes a cast of characters with interesting story lines and realistic hair textures.

In The Curly Kids Coloring Book the characters rock hairstyles such as cornrows, puffs, knots and twists and the illustrations are beautiful.

“Those with naturally curly hair in the media tend to straighten it, leaving little girls without role models. The coloring book is designed to fill that void and offset the lack of representation.” A spokesperson at CurlCentric

This coloring book is NOT just for kids!  This coloring book is for all.  Race, age and gender does not matter.  I am looking forward to seeing how the book develops in the future and hope that it becomes a series.  It is very important that we produce positive images of natural Black beauty to our children. Children develop their self esteem through what they do and what they see.  The Curly Kids Coloring Book is a much needed publication.

Akira would like to gift a copy of this awesome coloring book to one of my readers so I am hosting a give away on her behalf.  One of my lucky readers will win a copy of Curly Kids Coloring Book (contains over 30 positive images!)
