Fun Things to Do in Cape Cod

cape-cod

One place that I have always wanted to visit is Cape Cod Massachusetts.  I’ve always imagined myself walking the beaches there with wind blown hair, watching the sun set over a lighthouse.  I got to take the trip of a lifetime recently to explore Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Boston in honor of my big 50th Birthday!! Coastal towns with beaches have always beckoned me. Cape Cod is a conglomerate of small Coastal villages, each with its own flavor and flair.  The vibe here is slow, quiet and peaceful which is a stark difference from Atlanta and just the type of break I needed.

We rented a beautiful beach themed cottage in the Cotuit area in The Town of Barnstable. Barnstable is the largest community on Cape Cod and we chose it because of its proximity to the Ferry and other attractions.  There is plenty to taste, sip and explore in Cape Cod but we weren’t there nearly long enough to do it all, although we enjoyed ourselves trying.

Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory

I’m sure that you are familiar with Cape Cod Potato Chips.  They are only the best kettle roasted chips in the world!  Their factory is located in Hyannis which was a short distance away.  This self guided tour is short and sweet but you get to see the chips being made.  It ends in the factory store which is floor to ceiling chips.  They have all the flavors including the ones you can’t get here at home. The Sea Salt & Vinegar are my favorite.

Wineries

I found 2 lovely wineries close by and I made sure to stop by both of them.  I will be creating a separate post to tell you all about them.

We visited Cape Cod Winery in East Falmouth and First Crush Winery in Harwich. Because of the region both have interesting wines.

Beaches

Since Cape Cod is a peninsula it is surrounded by water so there are lots of beaches.  We visited two beaches in Cape Cod. Both were public beaches near where we were staying.  The home came with an area beach pass that allowed us access and free parking.

Craigville Beach is a pleasant white sand beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.  Not very crowded and very relaxed.  We had perfect weather which was 85 degrees and not a cloud in the sky.  Perfect for picture taking, grandbaby watching and being outdoors.

Loop Beach was very private and for Barnstable residents only.  It overlooks Nantucket Sound. We met lots of families with children.  We had an amazing time as a family here. My son dug a hole and put the baby in it.  (How we have fun)

Lobster Rolls

Of course I had to try the food that New England is known for and that’s Lobster Roll.  This amazing sandwich is basically a fresh baked roll that is filled to the brim with delicious Lobster meat and sprinkled with chives.  OMG it is to die for.  I tried them at a few different places just to get a real feel for them and I have to say that Cape Cod Classic Clambakes had the best one. The Lobster was cooked just right so that it was very tender and tasty.  It was served cold on a great piece of bread and lightly flavored with butter and lemon.

Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard

Part of our visit to Cape Cod included taking a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard by Ferry.  We got to take a scenic drive to Falmouth to catch the Ferry and it was followed by a magnificent boat ride to the Oak Bluffs side of Martha’s Vineyard.

This was just one leg of the trip of my dreams to Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard with my family.  The trip continues with a visit to Martha’s Vineyard, Inkwell Beach and Boston.  It was a wonderful getaway and a perfect birthday celebration.  One that I won’t soon forget.
