Miss Naturals Pageant & Enrichment Programs

Atlanta is full of fun activities that include children. There are several organizations set up to cater to the growing needs of our kids and you don’t have to look very far to find them. As the mother of a tween girl, I was happy to find out about Miss Naturals Pageant & Enrichment Programs. Founded by Organizer, Tachia Peck, it is set up to meet the needs of the African American girl between the ages of 5-18. Although the focus is on encouraging self … Continue reading

Top 10 MUST HAVE Natural Hair Products (For My Kid)

I have tried a LOT of products on my natural hair since I went natural in 2006. My daughter, however, is a different story. Since she suffers from eczema, dry and itchy scalp I am very careful about what I put on her scalp and her natural hair. She has been natural since birth. I have never applied any heat to her hair. She wears mostly twists, twistouts, plaits and puffs. Here is my Top 10 List of Products that I use for her and … Continue reading

Little Girls Need Daddies Too!

I love this picture so much. Its of my daughter and her father, my husband, at her graduation. I am nearly brought to tears every time I look at it. Seeing the confidence in her gaze and the security in her eyes as her father gently kisses her head… It opens old wounds for me of growing up without a father. It creates a longing for something that I never had. Paternal love. It brings me joy when I understand what she has. Paternal love. … Continue reading

Beautiful and Dark

Are you color struck? Do you find yourself saying things like, “She is so pretty to be so dark!?” or telling someone, “You better keep her out of the sun, you don’t want her to get to dark.” or my favorite when looking at someone’s newborn child you say, “Oh don’t worry she wont get too much darker.” To be “color struck” as defined by UrbanDictionary.com is: To have an aversion to someone’s skin color, usually used in the African-American community. I’d say that was … Continue reading

Preparing Your Child for the Loss of a Loved One

I don’t think that anyone is ever prepared for the loss of a loved one. My family experienced a loss last week. On February 12th, 2013 my husband lost his dear Mother. Although, she was elderly and ill losing her has not only been a horrible blow to us, but especially to our young daughter. She was not adequately prepared to witness this transition and I blame myself. After seeing her reaction to her grandmother laying in the casket I then realized that maybe I … Continue reading
