When I heard that Olympic great, Gabrielle Douglas, was scheduled to speak at Dekalb County’s Youth Empowerment Breakfast, I just had to make sure that my daughter was present. Held at the Marriott Evergreen Resort in Stone Mountain park this event was packed to the rafters with eager girls from all age groups. The event was hosted by Dekalb County Commissioner, Sharon Barnes Sutton and was MC’d by Karen Graham, Co-Host of Fox 5 Good Day Atlanta. Other speakers included Interim Chief Executive Officer, Lee May.
The Youth Leadership Academy is an initiative that I developed in 2008 to meet the needs of Dekalb County youth through leadership, development, life skills evelopment, eductaional enrichment and community service. ~Hon. Sharon Barnes Sutton M.B.A.
Stephenson High School Color Guard started the event with The Presentation of Colors.
I like that they allowed the girls that were present to gather around Gabby to ask questions. One little girl simply wanted to know what Gabby’s favorite color was. (yellow) Interactions and exchanges like this is a key way to motivate our young ladies to strive for greatness.
These 2 little princess came prepared to have their pre purchased books by Gabby Douglas signed.
The setting was beautiful, with a live jazz band giving us soothing background music to enjoy.
My daughter and I had a great time at this function and look forward to attending again next year.
