For 15 years Taliah Waajid has been bringing hair shows to Atlanta, Ga. The World Natural Hair Show is now touted as being the biggest natural hair show in the world! With close to 30,000 attendees last year its no wonder that this huge event has to be thrown twice a year. Every year (once in the Spring and once in the Fall) crowds come from near and far to gather together for this hair show. This family friendly annual event focuses on natural hair health, style and maintenance and provides a venue that everyone in the natural hair community can participate in. From the vendors, to the entertainment, pre party and Worlds Top Natural Hair model crowning this hair show has something for everybody. This recent spring show was held on April 27th & 28th. My daughter and I attended the Saturday show on April 27th and experienced the daytime activities. Not only did we have fun spending quality cultural time together but we got to see African American commerce at its best.
All of the top brands were there Design Essentials, Jane Carter and Curls Unleashed to name a few.
One of the things that I believe that will keep the World Natural Hair Show in the forefront when compared to other hairshows is its low entry fee and its kid friendly atmosphere. At only $10 to get in the price is a far cry from some of the more costly venues that I have attended. They not only allow you to bring your children but they also cater to them with several stations filled with kid related activities. The Rock Wall climbing was a big hit.
I love how my sisters showed up and showed out with their natural hair styles. Everything from Afro’s to Loc’s to Braids to Wash N Go’s you name the style and it was represented.
The marketplace set up with aisle after aisle of vendors selling everything that a natural girl could dream of. If you call yourself a “Product Junkie” then this would be your crack house. Most brands offer substantial discounts on their products at hair shows. Smaller brands are also present with low prices as they make their footprint in the industry. There was a vendor present for every aspect of of natural hair care.
Live product and styling demonstrations drew the crowds attention throughout. There was also spoken word poetry, music and dancers.
The numbers are not in yet to tell us how much revenue the World Natural Hair show brought to Atlanta but it has to be significant. People traveled from across the country to attend in the thousands to participate in these activities. I have watched this hair show grow substantially in the past 6 years that I have been attending and I am happy to support anything that promotes positivity, fellowship and commerce in our community.
