Why is Our Natural Hair Unacceptable?

Here we go again folks.  Another little child suffers the consequences of wearing her hair natural. Apparently, Deborah Brown Community School a public charter school in Tulsa, OK believes that natural hair styles such as afros, locs, etc… are faddish and unacceptable and violate the schools dress code.

Parker, who’s a barber, said school officials at Deborah Brown told him Tiana’s hair didn’t look presentable.

“She’s always presentable. I take pride in my kids looking nice,” said Parker. – Fox23.com

As you can see here in this video clip, it brought the sweet little angel (and me) to tears.  She cries as she wonders why they don’t like her “dreads”.

From the pictures in the report her hair looks absolutely lovely.  When will this self hate end people? Although I am not joining in on the barrage of “finger shaking” that is going on regarding the recent comments by The Talk Host, Sheryl Underwood for her comments on natural hair textures.  I hope that this story here shows people how detrimental those negative thoughts and opinions about natural afro hair can reach down and affect our little ones.  I have discussed this topic before in a post for BlackAndMarriedWithKids.com (Ohio School Bans Afropuffs) Private and Public Charter Schools that harbor these old slave ideas that our hair is not beautiful in its natural state need to re evaluate their missions and purposes in my opinion.

Deborah Brown Community School – PLEASE apologize to this baby!  Your actions will affect her for the rest of her life.  According to your mission…

The mission of the Deborah Brown Community School is to promote excellence and improve student learning by providing individual students an academically enriched curriculum in a safe, secure and nurturing environment.

These actions do not seem to fit the mission.  “Safe, secure and nurturing environments” should not cause a child to cry and be made to feel ugly.

What would you do if your child’s hairstyle was deemed inappropriate?
