My father, bless his heart and rest his soul, had the right idea about wealth.  His idea was that he needed to create it for himself and his family by any means necessary and by never working for “the man”.  And he did just that. He hustled. He sold drugs and he robbed people. As a child I remember him having several nice cars. Lots of people were always around him. He owned a rec building that was a clearly a front.  He dressed very well, had a real flair for fashion and attracted tons of women.  I remember seeing him count the money and hearing lots of so called “meetings”  going on in our kitchen late at night.  I remember seeing the guns but I didn’t know what they were for.  His ill gotten gain provided us with private school education and the “appearance” of wealth.  However, acquiring things through illegal means can be detrimental and he suffered the debilitating results of that lifestyle which was violence, drug addiction, ruin and ultimately an untimely death. It was nothing like Empire or Power. Never that glamorous.  It was a violent way to live and no real wealth was ever created only bad memories and heart break.  He had the right idea but went about it the wrong way and in the end I had to borrow money to bury him.

All of this created a skewed vision to me of what real wealth is supposed to be and look like.  I lived a life having “things” that had no substance and because of that I realize that having a safe & stable home environment for my family means more than having a fancy car payment in my driveway.  It also showed me that even though I would like to attain wealth for my family that I NEVER want to ever hurt anyone to have it.  I bet you weren’t expecting that story as my way to lead into why I think that everyone should check out Lamar & Ronnie Tyler Present:  Generation One, The Search for Black Wealth.  This raw film shares real information about why the Black community is not acquiring wealth and it also breaks down what can be done about this issue.  Isn’t it time we had a real discussion?

Generation One takes a hard look at the numbers, giving historical context to early wealth creation in the Black community and tapping the expertise of the nation’s top financial experts to weigh in not only on how Blacks fell behind, but surefire strategies families can implement to begin building a strong financial legacy for generations to come.
