The National Association for Professional Women is the largest, most-recognized networking organization of professional women in the country. When the Atlanta Chapter president, Kimberly Wright asked me to speak at their next meeting I was more than honored to do so. My topic was “Thriving After Lay Off” my story of how I have been thriving after being laid off from the corporate job that I held for almost 20 years. To quote Kimberly in my introduction:
She turned her lay off situation (lemons) into good ol Southern Sweet Lemonade!
We met up at Maki Fresh, a trendy sushi style restaurant in Buckhead. More than 20 women gathered to attend this chapter meeting to hear me speak on the trials and tribulations of losing a job. With this being the first of many speaking engagements I was nervous but also eager to share my story in the hopes that It would help others. I talked to them at length about where I came from as the daughter of a 16 year mother and a drug dealing/using father. I talked about the trials and tribulations that I had experienced in life which included me losing my job among other things. I also spoke of being a happy wife and loving mother and now social media maven living in Atlanta. I ended with letting them know how all of it is leading me into my lifes purpose of sharing my stories to help others and of being a successful business owner that has major room for growth. Of course with me being a Natural Hair Enthusiast/Advocate i was able to share information about Natural Hair Care and maintenance and also share about my product Sistah Buttah.
Wonderful connections were made and I truly enjoyed this experience. I hope to be able to keep in touch with some of the women that I met there.
