Teacher Does Her Student’s #NaturalHair at School & Posts Pictures to Facebook

Does your child’s teacher have your permission to style their hair while they are at school?  What about posting pics of your child on social media? According to reports and a recent viral Facebook post, a teacher decided that one of her student’s hair needed to be done because it looked tangled and full of lint.  The child’s hair appears to be loose and natural.

Students Hair

So one of my student’s came to school today with her hair full of knots, lent and ridiculously tangled.  It looked like it hadnt been touched the entire break… so my classroom became a salon.  The photo on the left is before, and the right is after.  It just broke my heart so badly that I refused to let her leave school today the same way she came.  When I finished she looked at herself and said “aww so pretty”…the beauty is that she is normally non-verbal.  So now I’m crying lol.  My day has been made! ~(from the teacher’s post)

The teacher did take the care to only show the back of the child’s head so that she can’t be identified, I also think she did a nice job with those parts.  But I think that all of that is beside the point. Teacher’s should be respecting the privacy of their students.  I think the teacher is wrong for posting the pic and especially for identifying this child’s special needs on social media.  Maybe we are all making something out of nothing.  I get that she thought she was doing something good and maybe this teacher had the parents permission to do this.  I certainly hope so.  As the mother of a child that has always had LOTS of natural hair I have had to remind teachers several times to look but not touch my daughter’s natural hair.  They get fascinated with the length and the texture and the next thing you know they are trying to twist it.  It may seem like a harmless and maybe even kind gesture, but I think that it crosses the line, unless permission was granted by the parent.

What do you think?  Did this teacher cross the line?  Do you think that teachers should be restyling their students hair?  Do teacher’s have the right to post pics of your child on social networks?
