Mattel, the makers of Barbie, recently released 6 brand new dolls for their celebration of “sheroes” (female heroes). The women were honored by Barbie at the Variety Power of Women Luncheon in New York City. Among the honorees was Selma movie Director, Ava DuVernay. The movie Selma was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture making DuVernay the first African American female director to be nominated.
Her doll is gorgeous and even though DuVernay wears her hair in locs Mattel attempted to duplicate that look on the doll with long gorgeous black braids. I am so glad to see that her natural hair was at least recognized during the creation. The likeness is incredible, Ava’s doll captures her beautiful eyes, skin tone and jawline to perfection. They also paid attention to her jewelry selecting beaded and wooden bangles to adorn her wrists. I love that she is sitting in a director’s chair!
“Started by a female entrepreneur and mother, this brand has a responsibility to continue to honor and encourage powerful female role models who are leaving a legacy for the next generation of glass ceiling breakers.” said Evelyn Mazzocco, general manager of Barbie (BusinessWire.com)
Unfortunately this beautiful historic doll is NOT for sale! Other notable honorees included Emma Rossum, Eva Chen, Kristen Chenowith, Sydney Keiser, and Trisha Yearwood.
Kudos to Barbie for celebrating these sheroes and their accomplishments. The dolls are beautiful. it is so very important for Black girls to see dolls in their own likeness so I am especially excited about Ava DuVernay’s doll. I hope to see more gorgeous and realistic looking dolls from Barbie that promote positive body images and inspire girls to be all they can be!
