Happy New Year!  Wow I can’t believe that it’s 2017.  This is my first post of the year and I am pleased that this is my first story.  It’s the U.S. Mints 225th anniversary and they will be releasing a NEW coin that depicts Lady Liberty as a Black Woman with Natural Hair!

Lady Liberty Depicted As A Black Woman

The press release from the US Mint is here and it states:

The 2017 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin design is unique in that it portrays Liberty as an African-American woman, a departure from previous classic designs.  USMint.gov

This is the first time ever that an African American women has ever been depicted on an American coin.  This 24K gold coin is worth $100 and it definitely speaks to the diversity and genetic make up that exists in this melting pot that we call the United States of America.

This is the first of a series of coins that will depict Lady Liberty in a variety of ethnicities including Asian Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Indian-Americans to name a few.  This is also only the 2nd time that a woman of color has ever been on an American coin (Sacajawea was the first)

I’m sure there were many designs submitted and considered for the look of this coin but you must know that I am beside myself with delight that they chose to allow the woman to be represented with natural hair.  I adore her distinct African American features and her flat twisted or loc’d natural hair that is surrounded by a crown of Gold stars.   QUEENIN.

Thank you to the artist Justin Kunz and the US Mint.  She is beautiful and it’s about damn time!  This coin will be released in April 2017.  You can watch the unveiling of this remarkable coin here.  .

Did you know that there is currently NO US Money that depicts people of color? How do you feel about this coin?
