Juneteenth is a celebration that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Coming from Indiana I was surprised that Atlanta didn’t have very many MAJOR events going on to memorialize this day. This year I was invited to Juneteenth – Atlanta Parade & Music Festival and I was more than happy to attend.
This event happened in the park behind the Shrine of The Black Madonna Bookstore here in Atlanta on June 21st – 22nd weekend. It was two days of cultural celebration, unity, education, information and entertainment. My family and I attempted to attend on Saturday, the 21st but the rain storms kept us away. The following day was bright and sunny and just perfect to continue this important festival.
The park was packed full of men, women and children of all ages.. There were all kinds of vendors with everything from All Natural Fruit Smoothies, to Jewelry, to Art. I am always pleased to run into my friend and now my daughter’s natural hair stylist, Kiyomi Rollins of The Good Hair Shop.
I really enjoyed the Family fashion show that included African influenced fashions for all.
There was a variety of artists there showing their crafts.
The kids had a GREAT time playing and just being kids as they learned about
African and African American history.
It was an awesome day and a great way to spend the afternoon with my family. A true celebration that could not have happened with out its organizers. Thank you again to Bob Johnson and Vanessa Johnson for inviting us out. I cant wait until next year.
Please enjoy the video that we were able to capture at the event.
