Imagine A Future – A My Black Is Beautiful Documentary

mbibAs an attendee of Blogalicious 5 we had the opportunity to experience some of the initiatives that major brands have created that relate to African American women.  One of the key sessions that stood out to me at this years conference was the “Imagine A Future” documentary that was shown and the Q & A with film maker Lisa Cortes that occurred after the screening.  Presented by Procter & Gamble’s My Black is Beautiful campaign, this poignant coming of age film asks and answers a very important question:  What Is Black Beauty? As an advocate of natural hair acceptance and a promoter of self esteem of young girls I feel that films such as this should be shown in schools across the nation.  The views that were given and the points that were made throughout are discussions that are necessary in order for us to move our next generation of girls forward.

Centered around 17 year old Janet Goldsboro, the film takes us on her journey of growth and personal development.  We follow this beautiful young lady as she learns the lessons of self acceptance.  It deals with issues that many of us have faced as African American women and it does so behind the voices of accomplished and seemingly confident women such as Gabourey Sidibe, Gabrielle Douglas and Michaela Angela Davis to name a few.  Listening to their commentary as they shared their own personal experiences with negative self imaging, I could only reflect on my own past struggles as a Black girl growing up in Indiana. The bottom line is that “colorism” hurts just as much as racism and this documentary states the obvious which is that the media does not reflect our true beauty.  In the film the young lady, Janet, travels all the way to Africa to learn about her history and returns full circle with an understanding what it means to be…beautiful and black.  The segment on Sarah Baartman made my soul cry.  This entire documentary is a must see and I am not going to tell you any more about it because I want you to experience it for yourselves.  Please view it in its entirety below.  After viewing please leave the answers to the following questions in the comments:

What makes you feel confident & beautiful?

What can we do to teach our girls to love themselves?
