Whose Shoes

When I lost my job 14 months ago I was really shocked.  Really.  It was like an unexpected punch in the stomach.  I was a top performer and model employee for a company that I had given almost 20 years of my life to.  I planned to retire from this company but in 2013 they decided that my services were no longer needed.  After a quick cry to mourn the loss of the security net called my 9-5, I immediately began thinking of ways that I could turn my hobby -blogging- into a business.  After all I had always said that I wished there was some way for me to do THIS (blogging/writing) for a living!  I didn’t necessarily hate my job, but if i had a choice…  I was just doing what I had to do to help support my family.   When I lost that job, I decided that there was no way that I wasn’t going to take advantage of this opportunity! I mean if I understood it correctly, my employer was offering to pay me to NOT work.  Ok!! Within 3 days of that devastating news I was at a Technology for Business event here in Atlanta.  It was there that I was approached by Lamar & Ronnie Tyler about writing for BlackAndMarriedWithKids.com.

IMG_0785I quickly began attending more seminars and conferences that pertained to blogging and entrepreneurship.  Making all kinds of contacts along the way.  I made it my business to learn from people that I admired and picked up some incredible mentors as well.  I tried to surround myself with positive and like minded people.  I began to live the life that I dreamt of having which was to be a writer in a big city telling my story, making friends & sharing gems along the way.  I call it the “Carrie Bradshaw Experience”.   It turns out that the audience that I had gained while I was blogging/vlogging as a hobby was worth something in terms of reach and social networking. It was now the foundation.   As of today I have been able to double that audience.  It is my goal to quadruple that by this time next year to expand my reach.

Social networking is what I do.  I am now living my dream and doing what I love which is sharing information!  When I look at things now I feel like that job elimination opened the door for me to the opportunity of a life time! Entrepreneurship!   I now have my own company, The SistahChick & Co., LLC.  I write for various online and printed publications.  I speak at conferences, work with major brands, cover social events in Atlanta, sell my product (Sistah Buttah) and spread the word about natural hair. Am I an overnight success story?  On the contrary, I am far from “making it big” or even making a profit for that matter, however, I am walking in my own shoes.  I am living my own truth and I am having the time of my life!

So tell me, Whose Shoes Are You Wearing?
