Happy Mother’s Day! Heart of Haiti

photo (8)Mother’s Day Weekend is here once again and we all know what that means.  It’s time to pamper mom!  I found my self pulling double duty today to make sure that every household task is complete before the “surprises” begin!  I feel like Mother’s Day came early this year because of a gift that I received already.  It’s an awesome picture frame.  It has a very island feel to it and its made out of metal.   If you look closely the metal appears to be molded and shaped into a sort of wavy palm leaf design.  Its sturdy, heavy and very intricately crafted.  It fits perfectly with decor of my home and I cant wait to use it to encase a picture of my loved ones..  I adore it.   While examining this beautiful work of art, I see the words “Heart of Haiti” and I am even more intrigued because it says that it was handmade in Haiti.  In 2010 Haiti suffered through a deadly earthquake that left its economy and its people devastated.  Heart of Haiti is a movement that was created to give the people purpose and hope.  It is a “Trade Not Aid” initiative launched by artist and social entrepreneur, Willa Shalit, The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and Macy’s.
Here is how it works:
*Heart of Haiti uses native Haitian crafters and artisans to create beautiful handcrafted home goods.
*The home goods are sold through Macy’s.
*A percentage goes back to the people and into the Haitian economy.  Allowing people to once again make a living is key to getting the economy back on its feet.

There is even a certificate of authenticity that accompanies each original creation.  photo (1)This project is preserving the rich art and history of Haiti through these pieces. Another cool thing about this creative collection is that the items are all made mostly from recycled products like card board and old oil drums.  Wow!  It’s awesome to be able to contribute to a good cause and to get something beautiful in exchange. Heart of Haiti’s home goods collection is only available online.  Its a gift that gives back not only for Mother’s Day but all year long.

Wishing you a safe and blessed Mother’s Day Weekend!
