For the first 10 years of my adult working career I was a Pharmacist’s Assistant for various pharmacies in Northeast Indiana. I truly enjoyed my work. My training required me to learn about all of the meds, their uses, their side effects etc. I worked for a major drugstore chain and they trained me well. However, when I worked for an independent pharmacy my duties went beyond just counting pills because I also got to learn billing, advertising and event planning. One of my favorite events to help plan was the yearly Children’s Carnival and Health Fair. I got to work along side the Medical Society and many philanthropists in the city. These events lasted for 2-3 days and were always well funded and well received by members of the community. Families got to spend a day in the park while we made sure to provide back-to-school physicals, dental exams and other medical screenings such as diabetes and blood pressure. We would keep the children busy with carnival games and entertainment while healthcare professionals from all fields gave out information and advice. I really enjoyed that work and I miss it. That’s why i am so excited to share the Health Mart Pharmacy Champions of Care Challenge. People all across America are doing wonderful things in their neighborhoods and we NEVER hear about it! The independent Health Mart pharmacists want to show their appreciation by recognizing community health non profits for the work that they do. They are doing this by awarding $50,000 in grants towards further improvement of health and well-being in communities like yours.
