When I Grow Up… I Want to Be Just Like My Mom #KidsDreamingBig

I am honored to be selected as a Dream Kids Ambassador for African Pride Dream Kids #KidsDreamingBig Campaign

Dream Kids Scholarship Program

It’s been a long time since I was a little girl.  Yes, I am grown now but everything I am and everything I do comes from a place of trying to be just like my mom.  You see my mother suffered extreme abuse at the hands of my father but yet was able to still raise my sister and I to be awesome women.  I’ll never forget the night we left my dad.  There she was trying to calm us and soothe us in preparation for a life on our own, when I know she had to be scared to death.  Once we were away from my father I watched this woman blossom.  She had an amazing flair for fashion and it was the late 70’s so I got to watch her rock bell bottoms, halter tops and fierce hair do’s.  When she couldnt get her hair to afro the way she wanted she went for the wigs.  Boy did my sister and I love to play dress up in her closet!  One thing she did that i believe directly contributed to me being a natural hair advocate for children, was to NEVER process our hair.  She kept us natural until we were well into our teens.  I remember attending a predominately white school where the kids told us that we were Black and ugly on a daily basis.  The pulled our hair and even spit in it.  But at the end of the day there was my mother marching up to that school to get ballistic and assuring us that Black IS beautiful.  We rocked cornrows, afro puffs, twists. beads and braids.  On holidays we would get our hair pressed and curled. “You are beautiful, don’t ever let anyone tell you different.”  she would tell us.  “You can do anything you set your mind to!”  Yes, she taught us how to love ourselves and how to dream!  My mother is a proud wife and grandmother now.  She is just as sweet as she can be to my children and they adore her.  As long as I live I will always want to be just like her when I grow up.  I love you mom! (I know she is reading this!)

The SistahChick The LittleChick

As I raise my own daughter I am reminded of the thoughtful and careful way that my mother raised me.  My daughter (aka The LittleChick) has been instrumental in helping me to teach parents across the globe how to care for and maintain their kids natural hair.  6 years ago she was one of the first YouTube babies on the air sitting still while I gave instruction on how to wash, detangle and care for her hair.  Today she has over 200,000 views and the numbers still increase even though she hasnt made a video since 2010.  I only hope that her experiences are remembered as positive and that in some way I inspire her to go after what she wants and live out her own dreams.
