I won’t go into detail about all of the stories, because unless you’ve been living under a rock these past few days, these stories are all that is being discussed by the main stream tv media, internet, radio etc.  In a recent panel discussion HuffPostLive brought together 4 representatives from the African American community to discuss a few these issues.

Rev. Janette WilsonSr Advisor and Executive Producer, Rainbow PUSH Coalition

Prof. Jody ArmourLaw Professor.  University of Southern California

(Nancy Redd – Huff Post reporter & moderator)

Here are some of the key comments that I took away from the panel discussion.
from James Knight – Advisory board member from Horizon Science Academy – “…The board might have misunderstood what afro puffs are…It was a misunderstanding.  The rule was set to address the young men not the young ladies.  There were young men wearing afro puffs and we wanted them to be well groomed…”
from Leila Noelliste, Creator of Black Girl Long Hair – “…Our natural features are often characterized…People have tied meaning to our hair that is inaccurate.  There is a silent uprising…It’s the only way we can make progress to quietly wear our hair the way we want…”
from Rev. Janette Wilson “…Paula Deen represents a whole class of people who have grown up in a culture that views African Americans in a certain way…in a certain light and it has been allowed and permitted so much so that they find it natural, ordinary and acceptable…”
from Prof. Jody Armour – Law Professor.  University of Southern California – “…there is discrimination in schools, there is discrimination in employment…there is a wide gap between blacks in poverty and healthcare problems and all kinds of measurable conditions and yet White America believes that there is no discrimination against blacks… it connects to the self-image of those little black girls who have to go to school and try to learn in an environment that tells them that their true natural properties aren’t appropriate and part of the decorum of the American School System and they are supposed to somehow come through all of that with some kind of good strong self-esteem…”

I think that racism is alive and very well in the U.S. and abroad and until we bring light to it, it will always be this way.  And these few instances more than prove that.  We cannot allow the mainstream to continue to disrespect us and our children with their outlandish rules and ignorant statements.
Apology not accepted!

Do you think that racism still exists in America?  Is there anything we can do about it?

  1. I’ve been arguing for quite a while now that theres a such thing now as racism and prejudice 2.0. I never believe that vices like racism and prejudice are more than a cancer amongst segment of a group. I simply don’t believe that it ever defines the group as a whole. The 2.0 edition of this cancer is not vocal. It usually only speaks in private. It hides in the comment sections of online news articles. It seeps invisibly into the decisions of people who never have to give voice to their decision processes. My friends who are White despise racism because of the same reasons I do, because its hurtful. And hurtful stereotypes find a way of forcing others to believe things about you that are not true. So as long as racism and prejudice lurks, it could be them who are viewed as possessing those qualities when that couldn’t be further from the truth.

We have effectively shut down overt racism, but those who hang on to that addictive sense of superiority can’t seem to let it go because it makes them feel better than when they would otherwise just feel insecure. On Paula Deen I reserve judgement until things have effectively gone from what they heard the story was to what the facts actually are, and even then the Cristian in me moves right to forgiveness. We all do some pretty dumb things in this world. She is no different.
