5 Things to Remember When Working With Family – Brunch with Design Essentials

Design-Essentials-25th-Anniversary

The kick off to this seasons Bronner Bros Hair Show was Design Essentials 25th Anniversary Celebration Brunch.  This brunch was sponsored by Essence Magazine and hosted by none other than Essence.com’s Deena Campbell.  We were treated to a lovely brunch at Asante’s followed by a panel discussion with the McBride’s, the family behind the Design Essentials Brand.

Panel members included:  CEO, Cornell McBride Sr., President, Cornell McBride Jr., Director of Interactive Media, Sholanda McBride and Director of Operations, Andre McBride.

We learned about the humble beginnings of the company and what it’s plans are for the future.  It was a very intimate conversation.  We were able to gain some insight into the new products and sales strategies as well, including the fact that this year they named Ledisi as their first ever beauty ambassador. The moderator asked a lot of great questions that opened up the floor for the press media Q & A.

My question was about working with family. I wanted to know how they have maintained such a united front doing business together when in this day and age most advise against working with family members.  Here are 5 Things to Remember when working together with family:

Sometimes you have to let family go

Whoever is leading has to be able to make decisions

Don’t take anything personal

Family must meet the qualifications required for the job

Be sure to check you own short comings and handle accordingly

“In today’s landscape, there are so few family-owned beauty brands that have not only managed to hold on, but to continue to innovate and expand,” Taydra Mitchell-Jackson, director of marketing for Design Essentials®

At the end of the brunch we were presented with Design Essentials® 25th Anniversary LookBook. This book was HOT off the presses and is an absolutely gorgeous display of multi cultural models photographed by noted celebrity photographer Allen Cooley.  The images are absolutely stunning. Definitely a keepsake.

Watch my video for a peek inside this stunning LookBook and to see the Swag Unbagging of the Full size Design Essentials products that each invited guest received.
