Da Kink In My Hair – A Play by Trey Anthony

Da Kink In My Hair is a play that headlined in Atlanta last weekend.  It is based on a book written by award winning playwright, Trey Anthony.  Even though I usually am not a huge fan of stage plays, I was super excited to receive tickets to this show as a birthday gift.  I was immediately drawn to the title of the play.  I saw the words, “kink” and “hair” and being the naturalista that I am I was immediately sold!  I reached out to my dear friend @SwarthyDaisy, she was down, so we made an evening of it.

The production was held at the beautiful Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre here in Atlanta.

The story being told is that of an average day in a Jamaican owned and operated beauty salon that happens to be located in Canada.  It focuses around the shops owner, “Novelette” and 8 of her most loyal customers.

When I tell you that I did not know what I was in for, please believe it.  The set was SO simple and uncomplicated, with very few props yet the actresses were able to completely bring us all inside this tiny but colorful beauty shop to meet and interact with this loud Jamaican woman that owns it and her friends.  As I sat inside this salon I watched and listened as 8 women sat in Novelette’s chair one by one and shed their outer personas to reveal their inner most pain as they each got their hair done. These were no easy issues either, they really dove in portraying tragic and poignant stories of racism, colorism, discrimination, sexual abuse and homosexuality to name a few.  All of these vignettes were accompanied by dramatic lighting, wonderful choreography and beautiful song selections by the actresses, which included award winning songstresses like Angie Stone and Melanie Fiona. The sounds of the live Pianist and Percussionist just added icing to the cake.  After each story was told it ended with a lesson for us all wrapped in kind words (in a Jamaican accent) from the protagonist, Novelette.  It had me laughing hysterically one minute then suddenly holding back tears the next.  It had me tapping my foot at one point and silently begging God to protect all little girls at another.  I’m telling you that I was wore out when it was over!!

There are so many things that we as women have to deal with on the daily.  Its about time someone told some of our stories.  I could totally relate to pieces of each and every character.  Everything about this play empowers women to not only FORGIVE themselves but also to LOVE themselves.  It required us to think about the way we treat others simply because you never know what a person is dealing with on the inside.  It preached a message of sisterhood in the realest of ways.  Da Kink In My Hair is a MUST SEE play.  Judging by the standing O that was received after the finale, I would say that we all enjoyed it!  If it comes to your city do yourself a favor and check it out.

(This production is for grown ups and not suitable for children (in my opinion)).
