At a recent CUPSI (College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational) event the audience was blown away as a Black man and a White woman performed their poem “Lost Voices”. The spoken word type poem is unique in that they tell their stories in each others voices. He speaks experiences as a white woman dealing with sexism and she speaks experiences as a Black man dealing with racism. It was a very awesome performance and as a Black person who is also a Woman I was very moved by it! I have watched this video many times and can honestly feel what they both were saying.
“But to tell me you know my pain is to stab yourself in the leg because you saw me get shot. We have two different wounds, and looking at yours does nothing to heal mine.”
Kudos to Darius Simpson & Scout Bostley. Here they are performing “Lost Voices”
Isn’t it amazing what happens when we actually listen to each other? Congrats to these two for such an awesome performance. It is really a thought provoking piece on empathy, acceptance and understanding.
