The holidays are here! We’ve all got plans and to-do lists to complete. We must remember our recipes, acquire the appropriate supplies and clean the house to name a few items. The kids will be out of school and family will be in town. Some of us with school age children may even have a pageant or play to attend.
If you are the parents of children who have natural hair then the care, styling and maintenance is also on your list of tasks to accomplish! After all we want to make sure our little angels are stage and event ready! When it comes to natural hair, kids and the holidays, low maintenance styles always come in handy. If you are searching for ideas for that perfect style, here are a few things to consider:
Age appropriateness – what is appropriate for school age children? (Some styles can be too long or heavy for small children.)
Versatility – Can this style go from school to stage?
Longevity and durability – How long will the style last?

Cornrow Styles with Beads
For your active little princess this beautiful Cornrow style is perfectly low maintenance and very attractive and age appropriate. The beads add a fun spin to the style and come in a variety of colors to enhance any outfit. The hair is precisely parted. The cornrows can be braided starting at the nape of the neck, going up towards the crown in the back, then finally braided to the side in the front for adorable hang time.
(If you can’t do cornrows, don’t be afraid to consult with a professional!)
Cornrows in the Front with Nubian Twists
For an older child you might consider this partially twisted style that starts with a cornrow from the edges to the crown and ends with a 2 strand twist. This looks very pretty and is easier to accomplish if you are not that good at braiding. You could even unravel the twists later to create a fun twist out on the ends like this next style.

Flat Twisted Up Do with Barrettes
This style is a simple flat twists that start at the nape of the neck and the twists are directed up to the crown. Colorful barrettes are used to create a beautiful up do.
Some tips for getting this and any style to last a little bit longer:
Be sure to cover your child’s hair at night with a silk scarf or a cap.
Use your favorite leave in spritz to add moisture in between this style and the next.
Don’t be afraid to try something new and be sure to get your child involved in the decision making process when it comes to styling. After all, it is their head and they are entitled to having a choice on what they feel looks pretty to them.
Lastly, don’t be scared to consult with a stylist for assistance in creating some of the more elaborate styles. Not everyone becomes an expert braider or twister in a day. It takes time and practice to get it just right.
